How Do I Know What Winchester 70 Base Is Right For Me?
Choosing the correct scope base for a Winchester 70 can be quite frustrating and overwhelming. I imagine that they wanted to make things easy for their customers and that is why they came up with only 7 different hole spacings (it could be worse they could have made 10). Luckily we are here to help get you the correct base for your gun.
Below is a list of all 7 different options that we have for a Winchester 70 (14 if you include 0 and 20 MOA).
Winchester 70 Short Action
Winchester 70 Long Action (Also fits Pre 64)
Winchester 70 WSM
Winchester 70 WSSM
Winchester 70 HH (.325” rear spread)
Winchester 70 HH (.375” rear spread)
Winchester 70 HH (.437” rear spread)
My first (and only) piece of advice is to measure the hole spacings on your receiver, and compare them to the hole spacing measurements listed out on the mounts page. I will say it again because this is great advice (I dont mean to toot my own horn), measure the hole spacings on your receiver, and compare them to the hole spacing measurements listed out on the mounts page.
This advice does not just work for our Winchester 70 base, but for all of our bases. The measurement to start off with is the Center Spread (the distance between the two center-most screws). Using a set of precision Mitutoyo calipers is ideal for doing this but any set will work. Even if you have a tape measure or ruler you can usually get close enough to get what you need. Below are illustrations of all of our Winchester 70 base hole spacings.

The only thing left after matching your hole spacing, is selecting the MOA of the base. If you dont know the difference between our 0 and 20 MOA bases, or if you just want to learn some more about them, check out the link here.
There are a couple of our Winchester 70 Mounts that we make in our Standard Duty platform and in our HD platform. Click here to find out more information on our different platforms.
If you made it this far in the article and none of the hole spacing measurements match up to your gun, dont worry we didnt forget about you. There are a couple things that might be going on here.
I would double check that the gun/receiver is infact a Winchester 70. Sometimes our memory doesn't serve us well and maybe the gun is not a Winchster 70.
If the gun is infact a Winchester 70, we make an undrilled base that you can get to work. Just take our undrilled mount to a local gunsmith and they can drill holes in the base to match your receiver. If you are on the opposite end of this and your receiver is undrilled, your gunsmith can use our mount and hole spacing measurements to drill and tap the gun to a standard spacing.
