How to identify the correct EGW Picatinny rail for the Howa 1500, Weatherby Vanguard, Howa Mini Action, and Howa 1500 Super Lite.

Start With the Exact Rifle

EGW offers several different Picatinny rails for Howa and Weatherby rifles. The standard Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard, Howa Mini Action, and Howa 1500 Super Lite use different mounting systems and are not interchangeable.

For a standard Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard, the caliber usually determines whether the rifle uses the short-action or long-action rail.

Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard Short Action

Common short-action calibers include:

Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard Long Action

Howa Mini Action

The Howa Mini Action is a separate receiver size and uses a dedicated EGW rail. Do not substitute a standard Howa 1500 short-action base simply because the rifle is chambered for a short cartridge.

Common Mini Action calibers include .223 Remington, 6.5 Grendel, and 7.62x39.

Howa 1500 Super Lite

The Howa 1500 Super Lite uses its own dedicated scope-base footprint. Although it carries the Howa 1500 name, a normal Howa 1500 short-action rail will not fit the Super Lite receiver.

Choosing 0 MOA or 20 MOA

After identifying the correct receiver family, choose the amount of built-in elevation based on the distances where the rifle will be used most often.

Shooters regularly working at extreme distances may need additional built-in elevation depending on the scope and intended zero. Those setups should be selected around the optic's available adjustment range rather than distance alone.

Does a Weatherby Vanguard use a Howa 1500 scope base?

Yes. Standard Weatherby Vanguard rifles share the corresponding Howa 1500 short-action or long-action mounting pattern.

Does a Howa Mini Action use a normal Howa 1500 short-action rail?

No. The Mini Action is a separate receiver size and requires a dedicated Howa Mini Action rail.

Does a Howa 1500 Super Lite use a standard short-action rail?

No. The Super Lite uses its own dedicated mounting pattern.

How do I know if my standard Howa 1500 or Vanguard is short or long action?

The caliber usually identifies the action length. If the rifle's configuration is uncertain, compare its receiver-hole measurements with the measurement diagrams on the corresponding EGW product pages.

Should I choose 0 MOA or 20 MOA?

A 0 MOA rail is a good choice when most shooting is approximately 499 yards or less. A 20 MOA rail provides additional usable elevation for shooting around 500 yards and beyond.

When would I choose an HD rail?

HD is a good option for heavier-recoiling rifles, harder-use setups, or rifles using quick-detach rings and accessories. Standard Duty remains a good choice for normal hunting and general-purpose use.
