Savage Flat-Back Scope Mount & Picatinny Rail Fitment Guide
How to identify a Savage flat-back receiver, measure the mounting-hole spacing, and choose the correct EGW Picatinny rail.
Identifying the Correct Savage Flat-Back Rail
Savage flat-back rifles are best identified by the receiver measurements rather than by caliber alone. EGW offers separate rails for short-action, medium/J-Series, and long-action flat-back receivers.
| Short Action | 3.930-inch center spread — approximately 3.9 inches |
| Medium / J-Series | 4.090-inch center spread — approximately 4.1 inches |
| Long Action | 4.630-inch center spread — approximately 4.6 inches |
Is My Savage a Flat-Back Receiver?
On a Savage flat-back receiver, the rear receiver bridge is lower and flat rather than rounded to match the front receiver ring.
A Savage with a factory AccuTrigger uses a round-back receiver and should use the separate Savage round-back fitment guide.
A rifle without an AccuTrigger is not automatically a flat-back. Older Savage rifles were produced in several configurations, so visually checking the rear receiver bridge is still important.
How to Measure a Savage Flat-Back Receiver
Measure from the center of one centermost receiver screw hole to the center of the other centermost screw hole. You do not need machinist-level precision; a normal measurement is usually enough to clearly identify one of the three receiver groups.
Primary Center-Spread Measurements
Short Action: 3.930 inches
Medium / J-Series: 4.090 inches
Long Action: 4.630 inches
Additional Measurements
If the center-spread measurement is unclear, the ejection-port opening and action-screw spacing can be used as additional reference points.
| Receiver | Ejection-Port Opening | Action-Screw Spacing |
| Short Action | 3.040 inches | 4.275 inches |
| Medium / J-Series | 3.275 inches | 4.522 inches |
| Long Action | 3.800 inches | 5.062 inches |

Choosing 0 MOA or 20 MOA
After identifying the correct receiver length, choose the amount of built-in elevation based on the distances where the rifle will be used most often.
|
0 MOA A good choice when most shooting will be done at approximately 499 yards or less. |
20 MOA A good choice when most shooting will be done at approximately 500 yards or farther. |
Some specialized Savage flat-back bases may also be available with additional elevation. Higher-cant 30 or 40 MOA rails are generally intended for long-range setups where the shooter has already confirmed the scope's adjustment requirements.
Standard Duty vs. HD
| Standard Duty | Machined from 6061 aluminum. Standard Duty rails are available for short, medium/J-Series, and long-action flat-back receivers. They are a lightweight, dependable choice for hunting, target shooting, and general use. |
| HD | Machined from solid 7075 aluminum. The current HD flat-back rails listed in this guide are for the long-action receiver and provide a more robust mounting option. |
EGW has also produced specialty flat-back bases in other materials, finishes, and configurations. For uncommon or specialized setups, check the current product listing or contact EGW Support to confirm availability.

The flat-back rails listed above use #6-48 x 1/4-inch mounting screws and include a T-10 bit.
- Make sure the firearm is unloaded before beginning installation.
- Clean the receiver holes, mounting screws, and mating surfaces before installing the rail.
- Confirm that the rail sits completely against the receiver before tightening the screws.
- Start each screw gently by hand and never force a screw that does not thread smoothly.
Common Savage Flat-Back Questions
Can I identify a flat-back rail by caliber?
Not reliably. Savage flat-back fitment is best determined by the receiver's center-spread measurement. Rifles with the same or similar calibers may use different receiver lengths.
Does an AccuTrigger Savage use a flat-back rail?
No. A factory AccuTrigger indicates a round-back receiver. Use the Savage round-back fitment guide instead.
Does a rifle without an AccuTrigger automatically have a flat-back receiver?
No. The lack of an AccuTrigger does not identify the receiver by itself. Check the shape of the rear receiver bridge and measure the center spread.
What is a Savage J-Series or medium action?
The medium/J-Series flat-back receiver is the middle-length version and uses a 4.090-inch center spread. It requires the dedicated medium-action EGW rail.
Should I choose Standard Duty or HD for a long action?
Both fit the 4.630-inch long-action flat-back receiver. Standard Duty is machined from 6061 aluminum, while the HD rail is machined from stronger 7075 aluminum.
What if my measurement does not match 3.930, 4.090, or 4.630 inches?
Measure the receiver again and compare the ejection-port opening and action-screw spacing to the reference measurements above. If the measurements still do not clearly match one of the three families, contact EGW Support before ordering.
Still Unsure Which Savage Flat-Back Rail Fits?
Send EGW Support the exact Savage or Stevens model, caliber, a clear photo of the rear receiver bridge, and the center-to-center distance between the two centermost receiver screw holes. Those details are usually enough to identify the correct flat-back receiver family.
