Savage Axis / Edge Scope Mount & Picatinny Rail Fitment Guide
How to choose the correct EGW Picatinny rail for Savage Axis-family rifles and the original Savage Edge.
Savage Axis Fitment Is Simple
EGW Savage Axis rails fit every Savage Axis model in every caliber, including the original Savage Edge. Unlike many bolt-action rifles, the Axis does not require a different rail based on caliber, action length, production year, or receiver shape.
Choosing 0 MOA or 20 MOA
The MOA built into a scope rail affects how much upward adjustment remains available in the scope. For most Axis rifles, the choice is between a neutral 0 MOA rail and a 20 MOA rail.
|
0 MOA A good choice when most shooting will be done at approximately 499 yards or less. |
20 MOA A good choice when most shooting will be done at approximately 500 yards or farther. |
Choose the rail for the distances you expect to shoot most often rather than an occasional maximum-distance shot. Shooters building a specialized long-range setup may also want to consider additional elevation options where available.
Hunter Series vs. Standard Duty
Both EGW rail styles below fit the Savage Axis family. The main differences are the material, overall length, and the amount of scope-positioning clearance they provide.
| Hunter Series | Machined from 7075 aluminum with a shorter overall design and no forward overhang. This provides additional clearance for shorter scopes, larger objective bells, and lower mounting positions. The Hunter is our preferred starting point for many Savage Axis setups. |
| Standard Duty | Machined from 6061 aluminum with a longer mounting surface. It is fully compatible with the Axis family and offers additional forward ring-position options. |

Savage has used different receiver screw sizes across the Axis family over the years. Current EGW Axis rails are designed to accommodate both common screw configurations.
This means the receiver screw size does not change which current EGW Axis rail you order.
Installation Tips
- Make sure the firearm is unloaded before beginning installation.
- Degrease the receiver holes, mounting screws, and mating surfaces before installing the rail.
- Start each mounting screw gently by hand. Do not force a screw that does not thread smoothly.
- EGW recommends 20 inch-pounds of torque with a small drop of blue threadlocker unless the firearm manufacturer specifies otherwise.
- Make sure the rail is sitting completely against the receiver before tightening the screws.
Common Savage Axis Rail Questions
Does the same EGW rail fit all Savage Axis calibers?
Yes. The caliber does not change the EGW Axis rail footprint.
Do I need to know if my Axis is a short action or long action?
No. Savage Axis rifles use the same EGW rail footprint regardless of action length.
Does the original Savage Edge use the same rail?
Yes. The original Savage Edge is part of the same EGW scope-rail fitment family as the Savage Axis.
How do I know whether my rifle uses #6-48 or #8-40 screws?
Current EGW Axis rails include both screw sets, so you do not need to choose a different rail based on receiver screw size. During installation, use the screws that correctly match the threads in your receiver.
Should I choose Hunter or Standard Duty?
Both fit the rifle. Hunter uses stronger 7075 aluminum and has a shorter no-overhang design that provides additional scope clearance. Standard Duty uses 6061 aluminum and offers a longer mounting surface with more forward ring-position options.
Should I choose 0 MOA or 20 MOA?
A 0 MOA rail is a good starting point when most shooting will be done at approximately 499 yards or less. A 20 MOA rail provides additional usable elevation for longer-range shooting, particularly at approximately 500 yards and beyond.
Still Unsure Which Savage Axis Rail You Need?
Send EGW Support the exact model name marked on the rifle and tell us the distance where most of your shooting will be done. A clear photo of the top of the receiver can also help if you are unsure whether the rifle is part of the Savage Axis family.
